Interesting theory…

October 24, 2011 at 5:28 pm (video research archive)

I’m not sure if evolution will stop for us in other aspects. Yes, the life and death brutality of natural selection has been observed by humans and now we can control it in our favour to a certain extent…(we still die) but social evolution is still growing and that was a vital part of our evolution in the first place. Language is still evolving, genetics are still passing through our descendants and so evolution cannot end…it can only change.

The genius of charles darwin…three part series presented by richard dawkins

October 24, 2011 at 2:53 pm (video research archive)

Every video I watch that’s presented by Dawkins…I learn something completely new! This is a very interesting and valuable source of research for me. Ideas and learning can sink in so well through the medium of moving image and sound! I’ve posted the notes I’d taken whilst watching these below the third video.

– The barbarity of nature. Ex. The strangler fig, chokes tree with its roots growing down from the treetop, tree eventually dies and fig feeds of its decomposition.

– Social Darwinism, each man to himself

– American company ‘Enron’ did a nasty experiment a few years ago. They lined up 15% of their weakest staff to be fired each year. Didn’t end well. The bosses didn’t necessarily choose the best but the most ruthless who ended up turning a blind eye to the widespread fraud that brought the company down in scandal.

– Big similarity between economic systems and biological systems

– The Eugenics movement of the early 20th century aimed to stop the weak from copulating by sterilising them. Look up Julien Huxley. Dark tribal vision. Barbaric – Nazi regime.

– Acts of kindness in nature, mutual grooming, calls of warning to others in face of danger. Acts of altruism, giving at a cost to oneself. Is that a result of evolution?

– Moral emotion…have they evolved? Trust, love? Women at the egg fertility centre, pick sperm on the basis of how nice the report of male donor sounds.

– We are immortal in the sense that our genetics are passed through our children and generations to come, just as they did being passed down to us.

– Kinship works against the selfish gene

– Are we nicer than our genes expect us to be?

– Limited kindness was necessary for human survival…You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.

– Chimps, our cousins, do this to a certain extent

– Niceness has been hardwired into us from the human origins, from being in small groups and helping each other.

– The joys of being consciousness human beings is that we can rise above our origins and extract ourselves from barbaric, sometimes instinctual behaviour.

– We can escape the brutal force that created us. We can empathize with those less fortunate and plan a gentler society.

It’s my lucky day! I could listen to this man all day…below is a documentry called ‘charles darwin and the tree of life’ in which Attenborough explores how Darwin came up with his theory and how we know he was right. Enjoy!

Richard Dawkins – The Blind Watchmaker documentary

October 10, 2011 at 9:15 pm (video research archive)

This is a very interesting documentry to compliment Dawkin’s book “The Blind Watchmaker” which I’m set to start reading very soon ( It’s one of a very large pile!)

I’m learning more everyday on evolution and every second of it is more potential inspiration for my own ideas on where to take my path of design for my book

Some more very interesting videos on evolution

October 10, 2011 at 8:31 pm (video research archive)

This video was amazing…it really shows us how similar we are to the early ardipithecus ramidicus in terms of posture and spinal cord positioning.

one word…wow!!!

haha! So in about 250 million years from now…the geographical world as we know it will be squished together into one massive continent!

The above was a cute simple animation of the source of all species alive today

“The Genius of Charles Darwin” documentry

October 10, 2011 at 7:32 pm (video research archive)

This first episode was mind blowing! Charles Darwin was indeed a genius…he dedicated his life to studying evolution and without him,we wouldn’t know what we know today of our ancestors…and I wouldn’t have this project to design!!

Unfortunately, Channel4 OD on facebook don’t want me to share this video directly with you…but I will hopefully find a way around it…maybe through my facebook page.
